Since 1934 generations of children around the world have delighted in the antics of the Bunnykins family at mealtimes and their fans mutiplied when the irrepressible rabbits hopped off the tableware to inspire little figures. They were soon regarded as the ideal gift for decorating nurseries and bedrooms with parents and grandparents buying new models for birthdays, Christmas and other special occasions, particularly Easter which has long been associated with rabbits.
Barbara Vernon, the young nun who created Bunnykins, would no doubt be surprised to hear how collectable her designs have become as she had young children in mind when she sketched the original scenes in between her teaching duties at an English convent school. Her father, Cuthbert Bailey, was the general manager of Royal Doulton's factory at Stoke-on-Trent and it was he who recognised the potential of her bunny drawings.
